about

Some media call Leipzig the “New Berlin”. First off: Why would you wanna be Berlin, if you get to be Leipzig? Nevertheless, one thing that might be comparable is the very different vibe one can feel in the neighborhoods circled around the city center.

One of the most special among those very different neighborhoods – or “Kieze” – is Plagwitz, roughly 3 km west of the city center. Plagwitz had been a small settlement with a population that would never surpass 200 people for hundreds of years, rather isolated from the urban areas, cut off by the Pleiße river and vast swamps. All that would change in 19th century, when it would become one of the main hubs of Industrialization for Leipzig, already numbering around 20,000 inhabitants by the beginning of the 20th century.

However, after the German reunification, Plagwitz was de-industrialized even faster than it had been growing in the decades before, leaving behind nothing but rotting factories and crumbling houses.

Today Plagwitz reversed itself once again, becoming a hub of creative industries, street art, international cuisine and dive bars. Come and join us on this 3 hour tour, exploring the history of Industrialization, the roots of ‚Hypezig’, graffiti, alternative bars‚ Spätis’ and classiest thrift stores. Can’t wait!
